Services for Older Refugees

  • The BCCC Citizenship Preparation Program, under a grant from the Maryland Office of Refugees and Asylees (MORA)/Maryland Department of Human Resources (MDHR) ensures that refugees age 60 and above have access to mainstream aging services in their community through the Services to Older Refugees (SOR) Program.

    This program:
    • Enables older refugees to live independently as long as possible
    • Provides appropriate services to elderly refugees who are not currently being provided for in the community
    • Establishes and expands working relationships with state and local agencies to ensure refugee access to aging services
    • Links refugees to naturalization services that help refugees become U.S citizens

Citizenship classes for older refugees are currently provided at the BCCC Harbor Campus, Goodnow Community Center, Church of the Most Precious Blood, and Active Day of Baltimore (for adult daycare clients).

BCCC currently partners with the following community organizations to help older refugees:

    • International Rescue Committee (IRC) of Baltimore
Provides opportunities for refugees, asylees, victims of human trafficking, survivors of torture, and other immigrants to thrive in America. This includes resettlement in the United States and ongoing legal and social services, such as help in filling out naturalization forms.
    • Maryland Access Point (MAP)
Local Aging and Disability Resource Centers connect older adults to a variety of community services like assisted living, meals, medication management, Medicare, Medicaid, caregiver support, transportation, personal care, healthy living, and dealing with medical issues.
    • Active Day Adult Day Care
An "open center" senior care model that provides seniors with transportation to the center, daily meals, nursing care, activities and classes.
