Program Overview
The Respiratory Care program leads to an Associate or Applied Science degree. Graduates are qualified to provide respiratory care under the direction of a licensed physician in settings such as acute care hospitals, intensive care units, skilled nursing facilities, physician’s offices and home care agencies.
Skills you will learn:
- Identification, location and function of lung structures involved in gas exchange
- Normal/healthy lung function and causes and effects of lung dysfunction
- Obtain & interpret arterial blood gases
- Provide and properly assess procedures and techniques
Graduates are qualified to sit for the National Board for Respiratory Care credentialing examinations that will allow them to practice in Maryland and all other states. Graduates are eligible to earn all credentials offered by the National Board for Respiratory Care.
The Respiratory Care program at Baltimore City Community College is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Respiratory Care.

Every degree-seeking student must complete the College’s General Education Requirements in addition to the requirements of his/her academic program. Through the College’s General Education Requirements, students acquire basic knowledge of the disciplines in the areas of arts and humanities, social and behavioral sciences, biological and physical sciences, mathematics, English composition, and computer literacy.
