The Baltimore City Community College (BCCC) Surgical Technology Program prepares students to enter this important profession. The two-year program leads to an associate of applied science degree.Surgical technologists help save lives and improve health on a daily basis. Working under the direction of a surgeon, they prepare operating rooms and equipment, maintain a sterile surgical environment, and assist surgeons during procedures.

Graduates of the program are qualified for employment as surgical technologists, assisting surgeons and other professional operating room staff members with patient care before, during and after surgery. Surgical technologists work in a variety of settings, including hospitals, ambulatory surgery centers, outpatient clinics and veterinary hospitals.

Participants fulfill a surgical rotation case requirement of 120 cases through BCCC’s clinical affiliation agreements with area health care facilities, including Johns Hopkins Hospital, Greater Baltimore Medical Center, Maryland General Hospital, Baltimore Washington Medical Center, Harbor Hospital and St.

Agnes Hospital. Students completing the program are eligible to take the certifying examination given by the Association of Surgical Technologists.

Students will learn to:

• Efficiently and accurately prepare for and assist with surgical procedures.
• Communicate effectively and purposefully when interacting with patients and other health care providers.
• Demonstrate behaviors that model ethical, legal and practice standards.
• Remain current in emerging technologies and innovations as they relate to the surgical technology profession.

The mission of the Surgical Technology Program at Baltimore City Community College is to provide students with comprehensive learning experiences encompassing the cognitive (knowledge), psychomotor (skills), and affective (behavior), domains necessary to perform as competent entry level Surgical Technologist while serving the needs of the community.

Always check with an advisor to determine what courses to take. All BCCC students must meet the College’s computer literacy requirement in order to receive a degree or certificate. All students are required to complete the PRE 100 course within the first six credits. PRE 100 is an academic achievement preparation course earning one credit.
