Welcome to Tutoring Services! Tutoring is offered free of charge to all Baltimore City Community College students across the main subject areas of all levels of writing, math, science, business, accounting, technology, and computer-aided drafting and design. 

Our goal is to help you build the skills and confidence you need to be successful in your coursework and in your personal pursuits. You can walk in to any tutoring center and connect with a tutor. We have no restrictions on the length of time you can work with a tutor, but remember that our goal is for you to need us less and less. To this end, our tutors are trained to help you develop the skills and master the course content you need to become an independent learner.

Tutoring Services provides academic assistance to BCCC students in developmental and credit courses in tutor math, writing, science, business, accounting, computer courses, and computer-aided drafting and design (CADD). Tutors show you study skills that will benefit you when you leave the tutoring sessions. Our range of tutors, including students, professionals from the community, and faculty, are here to help you. Please feel free to come to any tutoring center to connect with a tutor.

All students can access online help through eTutoring online tutoring. eTutoring is available through Canvas and provides tutoring in writing assistance, statistics, accounting, biology, A&P, biology, chemistry and math.

What can you expect from tutoring?

• Trained tutors who can act as coaches to facilitate your learning. 
• Your tutor will help you understand significant course concepts, develop problem-solving strategies and suggest study strategies.
• Support for developing independence as a learner. .

What are your responsibilities for tutoring?

• Preparation for the tutoring session. 
• A positive attitude. 
• An understanding that the work is your responsibility, not the tutor's. 
• Independent effort to complete the work. 

What tutoring cannot provide

• A tutor who will do or complete the work for you. 
• Help with every question and homework assignment.
• A perfected final product. 
• A guaranteed grade.
  
  

• Walk-ins are welcome. We do not make appointments.
• Try to prepare your questions and homework assignments in advance. 
• Bring your textbooks, class notes and assignments to your tutoring session. 
  
  

Tutoring is free to all BCCC students currently enrolled in the course for which they are requesting tutoring.

Class attendance is imperative. Always discuss course difficulties with your instructor first. Use the CAA as a secondary resource. Tutors will not tutor material covered in classes that you missed.

When you enter a tutoring center, sign in and present your BCCC ID at the Front Desk. Tell us why you have come: Do you want to work with a tutor? Do you want to use a computer? Do you want to study by yourself? Do you need to use a textbook? Do you have a writing assignment you want to discuss with a writing tutor?

When you leave a tutoring session, sign out and complete the exit survey.

There is no limit for using our tutoring services. You can come as many times as you like and stay in the tutoring center as long as you want to. Many students find tutoring centers a great place to get work done. We do, however, limit the length of time a tutor can spend with you in one visit. Remember, other students need help too.

Tutors are not permitted to work with students on homework, projects, and graded assignments.

Tutoring services cannot guarantee a tutor will be available for all courses.

Do not bring food or beverages into the tutoring centers. We work really hard to keep your centers clean and attractive.

Unfortunately, we cannot allow you to bring children to tutoring sessions/centers.

Cell phone use is prohibited in tutoring centers. Phones should be turned off or set to vibrate prior to entering the tutoring centers.

Keep your belongings with you at all times. We are not responsible for items lost, stolen or misplaced while you are in a tutoring center.

Business, Accounting and Technology Lab

Students enrolled in accounting, business, CLT 100 and BUAD 112 can work with tutors in the Main Building, Room 320 at the following times:

8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.

Math Center

Tutors provide assistance to students taking math courses in a walk-in setting in the Main Building, Room 104. Students taking developmental math, statistics, and calculus can work with math tutors at the following times:

8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.

Science Resource & Learning Center (SRLC)

Students enrolled in biology, microbiology, anatomy & physiology, and chemistry courses can benefit from a variety of tutoring opportunities. Labs, models, microscopes, computers, and study spaces are available in the SRLC. Tutors offer drop-in tutoring in the Life Sciences Building, Room 302 at the following times:

Writing Center

Students taking RENG 92, English 101, and courses with writing assignments can get help with thesis, organization, style or grammar. You can work with a writing tutor in the Main Building, Room 102 during the following walk-in hours:

Monday - Friday 
8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.

• Read some of your work and indicate problems in unity, coherence, grammar, punctuation and mechanics.
• Teach you how to repair errors.
• Guide you through the process of developing a thesis statement.
• Share proofreading strategies that you can use on your own.
• Help you assess if you have documented your research-based paper correctly (APA or MLA style).
• Raise questions regarding conformity with assignments.

• Proofread or edit your paper for you. Proofreading is going through one's draft to find typos and errors in punctuation, grammar, mechanics and usage. Proofreading is your responsibility, but tutors can teach you proofreading strategies that you can use on your own.
• Make any marks or corrections on your paper. It is your paper. Research shows that students who make their own corrections are more likely to remember what they have learned than students who have others mark up their papers for them. At the Writing Center, we want you to get a higher grade on the assignment you've brought to us, but more importantly, we want you to learn the concepts that will enable you to get higher grades on all your subsequent assignments.
• Approve, grade, or evaluate your work.
• Certify that your paper is free of plagiarism.

• Your assignment sheet. Why? It is nearly impossible to help someone improve his or her writing without knowing what that individual is trying to accomplish.
• A typed, double-spaced draft of your paper (if you are at that state of the writing process).
• A pen or pencil for making corrections on your draft.
• Specific questions.
• Your instructor’s name.
• Your course number.

As often as you wish but at least one full day before an assignment is due so that you have time to make the suggested revisions.

• A 45-50-minute individual session with a tutor focusing on the area(s) that you identify including thesis/topic sentences, style, organization, grammar/punctuation, and documentation. You may need to wait for an available tutor.
• Follow-up activities for skill development can be given if you would like additional work to build your skills.
• Motivation and encouragement.
