    Program Goals
     
    The primary goal of the program is to graduate students prepared to serve as competent entry-level Emergency Medical Technicians to meet the personnel needs of the Emergency Medical Services in the Baltimore Metropolitan Area.
     
    Objective #1: Upon completion of the EMT class, the student will demonstrate the ability to comprehend, apply and evaluate information relative to the role of an entry level Emergency Medical Technician.
     
    Objective #2: Upon completion of the EMT class, the student will demonstrate technical proficiency in all skills necessary to fulfill the role of an Emergency Medical Technician.
     
    Objective #3: Upon completion of the EMT class, the student will demonstrate personal behaviors consistent with professional and employer expectations for the entry level Emergency Medical Technician.
     
    In addition, the EMS Program will provide continuing education for certified EMTs as required by its communities of interest.

What are the EMT Vision and Mission Statements?

  • EMT Program Vision
     
    The vision of the Emergency Medical Technician Program is to be the program of choice in graduating competent entry-level Emergency Medical Technicians to meet the personnel needs of the Emergency Medical Services in the Baltimore Metropolitan Area.
     
    EMT Program Mission
     
    The mission of the Emergency Medical Technician Program is to provide EMS education to residents of Baltimore City and surrounding counties that prepares graduates to take the examinations leading to national registry and state certification as Emergency Medical Technicians. 

Educational Program

  • The EMT class is a 1 semester program based on the National Education Standards published by the U.S. Department of Transportation, National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Successful completion of the class results in the students being eligible to take State and/or National Registry examinations for certification as an Emergency Medical Technician.
     

What is Emergency Medical Services?

  • Baltimore City Community College offers the Emergency Medical Technician 9 credit course. 
     
    This 199 hour basic pre-hospital care provider course meets Maryland State and National Registry of EMTs requirements leading to eligibility for certification as an Emergency Medical Technician and will include the latest State of Maryland Medical Protocols for EMS Providers.
     
    The 199 hours is broken down into 165 hours of prescribed course instruction, 5 hours of optional training chosen by the instructor, 24 hours of field training, and 5 hours allotted for certification training. Course emphasis is on recognition of signs and symptoms of illness and injury and appropriate emergency care procedures. 
     
    Topics include: fundamentals of emergency medical service; patient assessment; airway management, oxygen therapy, and resuscitation; medical emergency; bleeding control and wound management; stabilization of fractures and spinal injuries; medical emergencies; lifting and moving patients; IV maintenance; and administration of approved medications. The course is 105 lecture hours; 60 lab hours; 24 fieldwork hours with no prerequisites required.
